Bamboo Delight Summer Youth Camp 2022
Bamboo Delight Summer Youth Camp 2022 aims at young people between the ages of 13 and 20 in Nyaung Shwe, Shan State. It includes English proficiency courses, General Music Classes, Introduction to Social Science Subjects and 21st Century Skill Trainings to help children develop their educational, mental and intellectual abilities. It also shares social values and knowledge for young people by sharing basic moral values and life experiences that inspire children.
After the Covid-19 hit in 2020, schools closed down. On 1 February 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, the military coup happened. Due to school closures, the youths in Nyaung Shwe have been deprived of essential learning, growth and development for two years now. Some got married, others started working, while some sadly got addicted to drugs and alcohol. Many young people say, “We used to dream big but now we dream small due to the lack of education but we really want to learn”.To tackle these issues, this project aims to provide intensive courses, trainings, workshops, and field trips to young people aged between 13 and 18 years old, in Nyaung Shwe. It aims to provide opportunities for teenagers to continue their education, develop their leadership and interpersonal skills to become responsible citizens.
At this camp it offered 4 skills courses in English. English Lead Instructor, Minn Myoh Minn Oo, carefully taught the children to be skilled at Grammar and also in pronunciation. The students had to take the English test once a month so that the progress of the students had been monitored. After 3 months of the camps, it saw significant improvements in children’s English skills of Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening.
The children in Nyaung Shwe were not completely sure about Music before. For children who only know how to sing and dance, now they can play instruments well and compose and sing their own songs. As Music Lead Instructor, Saw Ten Nay John, taught the basics and concepts of music, students were immersed in soft and caring manners.
External Guest Speakers were invited from the networks and conducted sharing sessions about social science subjects and skill trainings to raise the students’ social knowledge and mental well-being. Here are a list of completed social science and skills completed at the camp.

After learning these topics and skill trainings, students’ attitudes and behaviors have become on the positive side. And then, students developed their leadership skills to help the communities and to work together.
At this camp the children went on field trips, fun trips and hiking and created fun memories together as part of the program. So children are becoming more organized. As a result of these programs, we found that children are getting closer to sharing habits and helping each other.
Although we did not receive enough donations from donors for our project, Aunty Sue and volunteers managed to complete this camp. The camp project was successfully completed despite these difficulties. Special thanks to all the donors who donated their affordable amount for the education of children here and also volunteers and teachers for your 3-month full time commitment and making this dream happen for the children.
